Rounding up Children's Books about the Ocean

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

As a someone who loves children's books and is focused on providing reading resources for teachers, it only seems logical for me to recommend some great children's literature.  With that in mind, this is my first post of a reoccurring series in which I round up book suggestions for you.

My goal is to tell you about some of my favorite books, introduce you to new books, and make suggestions for books that can support your reading instruction. Since there are so many amazing children's books out there, my lists will aim to feature some books but are by no means a comprehensive list of the best books.

I have included links to each of the books, because if you're anything like me you'll want to own these books right away!

So let's get started with my list of 10 Books About the Ocean!

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

The Rainbow Fish is first on the list because well... it's The Rainbow Fish! You probably already have it, since it's a must-have book with beautiful illustrations and a great message for kids. If you don't already have it, what are you waiting for?!

Poor Little Guy by Elanna Allen

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

I had not heard about Poor Little Guy before, but I immediately fell in love with the adorable main character who gets caught up with a playful octopus! The text uses only a few words which makes it great to use for inferencing.

Three Little Words by Amy Novesky

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

With the popularity of the much anticipated Finding Dory movie this summer, I did not think my list would be complete without a Dory book. Three Little Words is inspired by the film and has pretty illustrations. It includes a powerful message for kids and even adults reminding us to "just keep swimming" and never give up!

The Blobfish Book by Jessica Olien

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

If you're looking for a book that is a great blend between fiction and nonfiction, The Blobfish Book is it! The book sets out to provides facts and photographs to teach readers about the ocean, but the misunderstood blobfish character keeps interrupting! Side note - Have you ever seen a picture of a real blobfish?! Definitely NOT cute!

This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

I was introduced to this Caldecott award-winning book at a recent reading specialists' meeting and immediately loved it! The book has simple text and subtle humor which makes it great for kids. Teachers will love the opportunities for making inferences this book provides.

Clark the Shark: Afraid of the Dark by Bruce Hale

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

This is a cute story about Clark the Shark who is nervous about having his first sleepover, as he is afraid of the dark. Great book to use for rhyming words.

Barnacle is Bored by Jonathan Fenske

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

Barnacle is Bored is a cute and funny book that reminds me of Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie series. The simple text and various emotions the main character experiences make it ideal for fluency practice.

Hello, My Name is Octicorn by Kevin Diller

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

As you can tell by the cover, this book has simple illustrations that even a kid could create... which is exactly why I love it!  I think it'll inspire kids to feel that they can write books too.  Not only that, it has a great message for students who struggle with not fitting in and feeling different.

The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

The Pout-Pout Fish is another book that you may already know about, but it is definitely worth mentioning just in case.  With rhyming words, a repetitive phrase, and an irresistible main character, it is sure to be popular with kids.  Plus, I guarantee the ending will get quite the reaction from little ones!

If You Ever Want to Bring a Piano to the Beach, Don't! by Elise Parsley

A roundup post featuring 10 children's books about the ocean.

And now finally... my FAVORITE book about the ocean! This book just came out in May and features a creative story about the strong-willed Magnolia.  But the best part?  It comes with a poster listing Magnolia's Dos and Don'ts of Reading!!  What an amazing bonus!

What are some of your favorite books about the ocean?  I would love to hear your suggestions!
